What Soldier Did Right Before Defecting To North Korea Adds To The Mystery As More Details Emerge

The US Military is in a state of shock amid the news that one of their own soldiers, Private 2nd Class Travis King, has defected to North Korea after making a mad dash across the border into the secretive Communist state.

As photos of him moments before the daring stunt looking across the border of the ultra-high-security area surfaced, a string of run-ins with law enforcement in South Korea came to light. A Seoul court had fined King in February for damaging a police car amid two separate assault allegations and was previously imprisoned for two months.

King’s mother, Claudine Gates is shocked stating she couldn’t imagine her son doing “anything like that.” Now, the US military is scrambling to establish the fate of King as North Korea has yet to produce the soldier or even acknowledge his arrest.

The motive for his high-stakes gambit remains unclear. Some had initially suspected it was a “stupid prank or stunt, like a TikTok,” according to tour guide Sarah Leslie from New Zealand who was with the group during King’s crossing and even snapped the photo of him right before the run.

King had joined a tour with 43 other travelers from Seoul after he fled from his military superiors and made the mad dash across the border. This bizarre incident has shocked everyone, especially after it was learned that King let out a loud maniacal laugh before crossing the DMZ.

After the maniacal laugh, King made a break for North Korea. Military personnel rushed to get the tour inside. At the same time, US and South Korean soldiers guarding the DMZ tried to stop King but were unsuccessful.

King’s mother has made a public plea for her son to come home, and it remains to be seen if the US will be able to secure his release or if King will have to pay for his wrongdoings. In the meantime, questions remain as to why a once-convicted soldier would risk his life and freedom to escape to North Korea.

North Korea has maintained complete silence about the incident and has yet to communicate with the Biden administration since the president took office.

King was in trouble with local authorities regarding what amounts to bar fights and dust-ups with police. None of his behaviors were earth-shattering enough for one to run across the DMZ.
