Looks Like Bud Light Has A Whole New Revolt On Their Hands

The Teamsters union, representing 5,000 workers at 12 Anheuser-Busch breweries in the U.S., announced Saturday that its members have overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike against the beermaker if a new labor contract is not reached early next year. This vote comes as the union’s current contract with Anheuser-Busch is set to expire on February 29, 2024.

According to the Teamsters, 99% of their members voted in favor of the strike, which could potentially affect the production and distribution of popular beers like Budweiser and Bud Light. The union states that the strike is necessary to secure better wages, job security, and benefits for their workers.

Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien stated, “Teamsters stand firm in our fight for the best contract at Anheuser-Busch, and this powerful strike vote proves it. Our members’ hard work, talent, and sacrifice are what put Anheuser-Busch products on the shelf, and we are committed to getting a contract that recognizes and rewards their efforts.”

While the union and Anheuser-Busch have reached tentative agreements on certain issues, such as ending tiered healthcare and restoring retiree health benefits, negotiations on job security have stalled. The union is also voicing concerns over the company’s recent announcement of $1 billion in stock buybacks for shareholders while neglecting to address the needs of their workers.

Jeff Padellaro, director of the Teamsters Brewery, Bakery, and Soft Drink Conference, stated, “Anheuser-Busch can’t kick this can down the road much longer. The Teamsters don’t want to be forced onto the picket line at any employer, but we are fully prepared to walk if Anheuser-Busch doesn’t get serious about negotiating a record contract that also protects good union jobs.”

Anheuser-Busch responded to the strike vote, stating that they are “committed to negotiating in good faith with the union to reach an agreement that recognizes and rewards the talent, commitment, and drive of our employees.”

The company has faced declining sales over the past year, following backlash from their partnership with transgender activist, Dylan Mulvaney. Sales for their popular brands, like Bud Light, have also declined.

This strike authorization vote comes months after the Teamsters reached a new five-year labor agreement with logistics giant UPS in the summer. The new deal included significant pay raises and improved benefits for workers.

The specter of a strike by the Teamsters against Anheuser-Busch has raised concerns for beer lovers and industry insiders alike. It remains to be seen if the two sides can come to an agreement before the current contract expires. However, the Teamsters are standing firm in their fight for fair treatment and respect for their hard-working members.
