Vermont Capitol Cut Off! Catastrophic Flooding, Official Gives Haunting Update

Flooding in Vermont is the worst it has been in almost 100 years. The state’s capitol of Montpelier is on the brink of disaster because the city’s dam is about to fail.

Extreme downpours have hit the northeastern portion of the United States and Vermont was labeled as the “highest risk.”

As the dam that protects the city is filled to capacity Montplelier’s City Manager William Fraser posted a horrible update.

There are few evacuation options due to the current flooding.

“The Wrightsville Dam only has 6 feet of storage capacity left. If water exceeds capacity, the first spillway will release water into the North Branch River. This has never happened since the dam was built so there is no precedent for potential damage,” he wrote in a Facebook post. “There would be a large amount of water coming into Montpelier which would drastically add to the existing flood damage. This will be particularly bad along the North Branch River corridor and into the downtown. Unfortunately, there are very few evacuation options remaining. People in at risk areas may wish to go to upper floors in their houses.”
“As a precaution the City is moving the dispatch center to the Water Treatment Plant where we have already established operations jointly with Barre City. We will also move our full Emergency Operations Center to the Treatment Plant as well. Computer and radio systems at the Police Station may become incapacitated if floodwaters increase,” he added.

Making the situation even more dangerous the three radio towers used to dispatch first responders are no longer functional and the electric company is racing to make the repairs.
Vermont State Police have said that the state’s “swift water rescue” team has made over 100 rescues and the number is climbing.

The flooding is due to the half-foot of rain the area received on July 10, 2023.
