A routine tree trimming job turned tragic on Tuesday when a Virginia man was pulled headfirst into a woodchipper and died as a result. The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. at a residential home in the 600 block of First Avenue in Saltville.
According to the Smyth County News and Messenger, the victim’s identity has not been released and authorities are providing few details about the incident. However, it is known that a tree trimming crew was working at the home when the accident took place.
Smyth County Police Chief Erik Puckett told the newspaper that none of the crew members saw what caused the man to be pulled into the heavy machinery. Despite this, Puckett believes it was a tragic accident. “It’s an unfortunate incident and I hate that it happened,” he said.
The man’s body was retrieved from the woodchipper and the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office is now assisting local police with the investigation. Additionally, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is expected to conduct its own investigation into the accident.
